Hot Chocolate and the Cups...

Trent's aunt and uncle are currently serving a family history mission and forwarded this thought/story to the family. It came from their mission team leader.

HOT CHOCOLATE AND THE CUPS

A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives. Offering his guest hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: "Notice that all the nice looking; expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you're drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup: but you consciously went for the best cups. And then you began eying each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak Kindly. And enjoy your hot chocolate.

Put another way. The relationships we enjoy with each other are the name of the game (the cups), the gospel of Jesus Christ is the hot chocolate, we should share it freely.

Surprises in January!!

Grandpa and Grandma purchased new toys for their house today and Lucie and Jack were very excited!
Since the train was put away when Christmas was over both Jack and Brig just look at the shelves with the train cars and say, "choo, choo." My dad wanted to be able to have a train that they could actually play with so they purchased the Fisher Price Geotrax grand central station. It is really cute and very easy for them to operate. As you can see from Jack's face expression in the picture below he was very excited (he was watching the train come through the tunnel). Grandpa was very nice and patient to teach/show Jack how to operate everything. I think he was just as excited as the boys were to play with it!!
Play dishes was the other new item and Lucie had a lot of fun setting them up, taking orders, and serving food. Both Brig and Jack love to play with the dishes as well. When they are at our house the play kitchen is the busy little center!

"Tutu" Cute!

Lucie went to a friend's birthday party on the weekend. It was a ballerina party and the mom had made tutus for all of the little girls and then they decorated their own crowns. Lucie had so much fun and did not want to leave the party. The tutu did not come off for very long the rest of the day. She had lots of fun playing princess and then with the help of my mom and Noelle she discoverd that she could wear it on her head so then she was pretending that she was getting married!!

A Few Memories...

A few things that I want to remember....

  • Lucie loves the song Called to Serve and has learned both verses of the song. She put in a request to sing it in sacrament meeting and yesterday was the day. It was the closing song and as soon as the organist began playing the song she quickly sat down on the bench, folded her arms and sang the whole song with rest of the congregation. It was priceless!!
  • Jack requested to sing I Love to See the Temple in nursery singing time.
  • By the end of the day on Sundays we are all tired and yesterday was no exception. We were just getting ready to leave my mom and dad's house and Lucie had reached her end point for the day she proceeded to say between tears..."all I want is a nice shower, nice jammies, and stories!!!" Don't we all!!
  • Everything in Lucie's book takes 90 hours...!!
  • Jack doing the funky thing with his eyes when he dances or does not want to pay attention to you...I am trying to get a picture of it, but have not had good luck with capturing it yet.

Tasty Tuesday

I am copying the idea of "Tasty Tuesday" from a random blog that I came across awhile back to post a new recipe every week. This week's recipe is HERB FOCACCIA bread and it is delicious! I love focaccia bread and wanted to try and learn how to make it on my own. This is the 2nd recipe that I have tried and it turned out really good. We ate sandwiches on it for 2 days and they were very tasty!! It looks like a lot of steps, but it really is not too bad to make. This recipe came from familyfun.com...Happy Cooking!

  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 1 tspn sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 ½ tspns salt
  • 4 ½-5 cups unbleached flour
  • 5 tbsps. (for dough) plus 1/3 cup (for herb drizzle) olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ tbsps fresh rosemary
  • 2 tspn thyme leaves
  • Coarse salt (optional)

Step 1
Pour the water into a large mixing bowl and stir in the sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and set it aside for 5 minutes to dissolve. Note: If the yeast doesn't begin to bubble within 5 minutes, repeat the process with fresh ingredients.
Step 2
Add the salt, 3 cups of the flour, and 2 tablespoons of the olive oil to the yeast mixture and beat the ingredients with a wooden spoon for 100 strokes. Set the dough mixture aside for 10 minutes.
Step 3
Add the remaining flour about 1/4 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. When the dough is too stiff to be stirred, turn it out onto a well-floured surface. Using floured hands, knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes, using more flour as necessary to keep the dough from sticking.
Step 4
Pour 1 tablespoon of the olive oil into the bottom of a large mixing bowl, roll the dough around in the oil to coat it, and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Set the dough aside in a warm spot until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Step 5
When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead it for 1 minute, then cut the dough in half and knead each half into a rectangle. Flatten each one and set them aside on a floured surface to rest for 10 minutes.
Step 6
While the dough is resting, lightly oil a large baking sheet, then sprinkle on a light coating of cornmeal.
Step 7
Transfer the dough to the baking sheet. Press and stretch it into oblong shapes, about 1/2- to 3/4-inch thick, leaving 2 inches between the loaves. Brush the tops of the loaves with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil. Set the dough aside to rise for 15 minutes. Heat the oven to 400° F.
Step 8
In a measuring cup, combine the 1/3 cup of olive oil with the garlic, rosemary, and thyme, and stir.
Step 9
Dimple the loaves with your fingertips, then spoon the oil-and-herb mixture over them, dividing it evenly. Sprinkle the loaves lightly with coarse salt, if you like.
Step 10
Bake the focaccia on the center oven rack until the tops are golden brown, 22 to 25 minutes. Transfer the loaves to a wire rack. To slice them for sandwiches, cut each loaf into quarters, then slice the pieces horizontally. Makes enough bread for 8 sandwiches.
Step 11
Tip for foolproof proofing:
Proofing, or getting dough to rise, happens best when the dough is left in a warm (80° to 90° F), humid, draft-free spot. To use your oven for this purpose, set it to "proof" or heat it at 200° F for 4 to 5 minutes, then shut it off. Place the plastic-covered bowl of dough on the center rack and close the door. To use a microwave for proofing, boil a cup of water in it, then place the dough inside as well and close the door, leaving the microwave off.

The Peanut Butter Story...

Last week we were having a bit of a trying day at our house...Lucie did not seem to like anything that I was doing or not doing for her. I did not do her hair right, did not let her be the color that she wanted to be when we played Hi-Ho Cherrie-O (trying to teach her to let the guests pick their color first), yadayadayada....I was trying to be so patient and allowing her to make choices, but when she let out a huge sigh that I did not make her PB sandwich right it was the icing on the cake and I lost patience and threw the peanut butter jar (which was just about empty) on the floor. I knew immediately that I needed a timeout so I went to the other room and said a prayer and felt much better when I returned to the kitchen. Lucie thought that Jack had thrown the jar so her sweet side had returned and she was picking up the jar and nicely teaching Jack that he should not throw things...I told her it was me that had thrown the jar and needless to say she was a bit surprised. I apologized and told her it was something that I would not do again...
The next day Noelle, Brig, Jack and I were having lunch at our table and Noelle pointed out that I had food on my blinds. I said oh it is probably from last week when Jack threw some of his food, but as I stood to investigate I realized that it was peanut butter. I grabbed a dishcloth and was wiping it off trying to decide if I should tell Noelle the truth of how the peanut butter got on our blinds...as I was thinking the following conversation was happening...
Noelle said..."Jack did you throw food at the blinds?"
Jack replied..."No mommy"
Noelle said..."Oh, Jack your mom would not throw food."
Jack replied..."Yes, mommy!"
By this point in time I could not keep a straight face and turned around to tell Noelle the story. When I said that Jack was telling the truth Noelle had a bit of shocked look on her face, but the story has quickly become a classic!! We have all had a good laugh about it!

A Hot Dog Roast in January...Sure, Why Not!!!

On Saturday it snowed about 3 inches in 2 hours and so we wanted to get the walks/driveways cleared before the next round (which, of course turned out to be not much)...

It was a joint effort to get the snow removed...and then Nick and my mom decided it was so nice outside that they would start a fire and we would roast hot dogs...

They were delicious and it was a lot of fun to enjoy the patio in January!

The picture of the trailer is included because Nick wanted me to make it look like we were really camping in the mountains having our hot dog roast, but it was pretty much impossible to take a picture without a house in the background!!

As a side note...after our hot dog roast our clothes of course did not smell too nice and I wanted to get them right in the washer...I guess I thought the camera needed a wash as well because I left my camera in the pocket of my coat. Luckily, I remembered about 10 minutes into the cycle and I was able to get it out. It is still drying out in bowl of rice (thanks to an article that Trent had read recently) so we are still waiting to see if it is going to work (crossing my fingers). If not, I will be using Lucie or Jack's Fisher Price digtal camera!!
